Quiet HopeLamentations 3:23

When Hope and Habit Look the Same

This message is for no longer being able to tell the difference between hope and habit

The prayer has worn smooth, the way the middle of a stone step wears smooth.

You say it in the same chair. Roughly the same hour, near enough the same words, and the words have lost their edges from being handled so often. It has been eleven years, or nine, or six, and somewhere along the way something changed that you have never said out loud to anybody, including God, which is the one place it would make any sense to say it.

You cannot tell any more whether you are hoping or only remembering how.

That is the thing. Not despair. Despair would at least be definite. This is quieter and harder to hold: the prayer arrives, the mouth knows the route, the sentences come out in the order they always come out in, and afterwards you sit in the cooling of the room with no idea whether anything happened. There is no feeling attached to it and there has not been for a long time. And you cannot work out whether the feeling left because the hope left, or whether the hope is still down there with nothing on the surface to show for it.

And there is a small dread that keeps you from examining it too closely. Because if you look properly and find it is only habit, then what have the last eleven years been? A woman in a chair, talking to a ceiling, keeping a routine going out of nothing but the fear of what stopping would mean.

So you do not look. You keep saying it. And the not looking has become part of the routine too.

I want to sit down in this with you rather than talk you out of it. You are not backslidden. You have not lost your faith. You have been faithful a very long time in a situation that has not changed, and the interior weather of that is hard, and almost nobody writes about it because it does not resolve neatly.

I am not going to tell you what your prayer is about. You know. It might be a person, or a body, or a house that is quiet, or something you asked for at twenty five that you are still asking for. Whatever it is, hold it while you read this, and let me put a few true things underneath you.

When Hope and Habit Look the Same

Habit is not the lesser thing

The first thing I want to say is the thing that surprises people, so let me say it plainly. Habit is not the enemy of hope. It never was.

We have picked up an idea somewhere that a real thing must be a felt thing, and that anything the body does automatically must therefore be dead. That is not how God arranged His own house. The lamps in the tabernacle were trimmed morning and evening, by the same hands, in the same order, for decades. The bread was set out each week and replaced. The manna came every morning, and gathering it was ordinary work done by people who could have done it half asleep.

Repetition is not God's tolerance of our dullness. It is His chosen rhythm. He made a world that goes round once a day and once a year and does not appear to be bored by it.

You are held by something that does not depend on your ability to feel it holding you. Scripture says the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us, so the guarantee sits with Him rather than with the temperature of a Tuesday morning, and the Spirit is the one keeping it there while you sit in a chair unable to detect anything at all.

It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.Lamentations 3:22 and 23

Look at where that sentence comes from, because the comfort is only worth having if the setting is honest.

That is not written by a man whose circumstances improved. It sits in a book of laments, written among ruins, by somebody who had watched the worst thing he could imagine actually happen. There is no denial anywhere near it: the wormwood and the gall are named, the being walled in is named, the man says his strength and his hope are perished from the Lord. And then, in the middle of that, the mercies are new every morning.

He is not saying the ruins are over. He is saying the mercy arrived again today, in the ruins.

New does not mean different

Here is the part that speaks directly to a prayer worn smooth.

New every morning does not mean a fresh and different mercy each day, as though God were varying the menu to keep our attention. It means the same mercy, given again, to the same person, at the beginning of another ordinary day. The nature of it does not change. What is new is that it is handed over once more, and once more, for as long as there are mornings.

Which means sameness is not a symptom of anything being wrong. Sameness is the shape of how He gives.

You have received mercy again this morning, and it arrived before you had produced a single feeling about it. Lamentations 3:23 puts the newness in His compassions rather than in your capacity to notice them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an unremarkable morning into an actual visitation without anything in the room appearing to change.

And that reframes the chair. Eleven years of the same thing in the same place is not a machine running on empty. It is one woman meeting the same God at the same threshold, over and over, in the pattern He has used since the world was made.

I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this that turns into a defense of going through the motions, and that is not what I am saying. There is such a thing as a dead form and it does exist. But the test for it is not whether a feeling turns up. It is which direction a person is facing. A woman still arriving in that chair, still speaking to a Person and not to the air, is not going through the motions. She is doing the hardest kind of praying there is, which is the kind that goes on after the encouragement has run out.

You were given a faith that keeps standing when the feeling has gone quiet, and that is not a lesser grade of faith. Scripture says the just shall live by faith, not by sight, and it never once makes felt certainty the qualification, and the Spirit is the one who holds a person steady in a season where nothing is visible and nothing is measurable.

The test you keep applying

There has been an examination running for a while now, and I want to name it, because it is exhausting and it cannot succeed.

It runs like this: the interior gets checked for evidence of hope, nothing much turns up, and the conclusion follows that there is nothing much there. Then the checking gets harder, and it happens again next week.

But the feeling is not the evidence. It never was. Feelings are weather, and weather is real, and weather is also famously not the same thing as climate. It is like standing at a window on a gray day and concluding that the sun has been discontinued.

The evidence is elsewhere, and it is quite plain from outside the room. The praying is still happening. Nobody keeps talking to Someone they have stopped believing is there. A woman who had genuinely given up would not still be in the chair at the same hour with the same sentence, and she certainly would not be reading to the end of a piece about whether she still hopes.

You are still facing Him, and the facing is what hope actually is when the weather is bad. His word says that hope which is seen is not hope, and that if we hope for what we see not, then do we with patience wait for it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who calls that quiet enduring by its proper name in a person who has been calling it going through the motions.

The breakthrough

You do not have to tell the difference. That is the release in this, and I want to hand it to you gently.

Hope and habit are not two rival explanations of your morning, one true and one embarrassing. The habit has been the shape hope takes in a long season. A body keeps arriving; a mouth keeps speaking; the heart goes quiet for a stretch and comes back. All of that is one thing, and God has never once required you to produce a felt hope before He would count the praying as praying.

And I will not tell you that the thing you keep asking for arrives soon. I do not know, and nobody honest claims to, and there has been enough of people promising outcomes on God's behalf. What I can tell you is what has been settled, and it is this: the mercy will be new tomorrow morning, in whatever condition tomorrow morning finds you and your circumstances. That is not a prediction about your situation. It is the character of the One you have been meeting in that chair for eleven years.

You have not been talking to a ceiling, and nothing in those years went into an empty room. Scripture says He has put your tears into His bottle and asks whether they are not in His book, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary chair by a window into a place where a person has genuinely been received.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the chair. Christ is in you and His faithfulness is yours, so the standing to speak like this has already been given and does not wait on your feeling anything. Scripture is what these lines rest on and the Holy Spirit carries them, and the outcome stays His: however He answers, His mercies are new in the morning.

  1. Prayer worn smooth by eleven years, your sameness is not evidence against you. Scripture says His compassions fail not and are new every morning, and in the name of Jesus I say you again tomorrow, at the same hour, in the same chair.
  2. Fear that all of this is only habit and I have been talking to a ceiling, you do not get to grade my faith by what I can feel this morning. The love of God is shed abroad in my heart by the Holy Spirit, and in the name of Jesus I put you out of that room.
  3. Lord, Your mercies are new this morning, and You gave them to the same person You gave them to yesterday. I thank You, because You never once asked me to prove I still meant it before You came, and the chair by that window was never empty of You.
