Quiet HopePsalm 56:8

The Place You Still Lay

This message is for a grown child who has gone quiet, and a table you still lay a place at

There are three of you at that table and you lay four places.

You have never discussed it. Nobody has ever asked you about it, and if somebody did you are not certain what you would say, because the honest answer is that your hands do it before you have decided anything. Knife, fork, glass, mat. Four of everything, on a Sunday, in a kitchen where three people are going to eat.

It has been fourteen months. You know the exact figure and you know it without counting, the way you know your own address.

There was no rupture that would explain it. That is the part nobody can help you with. If there had been an enormous fight, a terrible sentence said in a hallway, something you could point at, at least the shape of it would make sense and you would have somewhere to put your hands. There was a thinning. Calls that got shorter, then further apart. Replies that came a day later, then three, then as a single word. A birthday card you posted early, and tracked, and watched get delivered at 11:42 on a Tuesday morning, and heard nothing about.

People ask how she is. You have a sentence ready, and it is smooth from use: she is well, she is very busy, we do not see her as much as we would like. It costs you something every time and nobody watching would ever see the price.

At night the phone stays face up on the arm of the chair.

And you have gone over it. Of course you have. Every conversation from the last three years has been taken apart and laid out and examined for the piece that broke, and some nights you find one and by morning you are not sure it was ever a piece at all. You have written messages and deleted them. You have written one and sent it and then read it forty times wondering whether it sounded like pressure.

The table is the thing that gives you away, though. Three people, four places, week after week, because taking one away would be a decision and you have not made it and you do not want to.

This one is yours, and I am going to write it straight.

The Place You Still Lay

He keeps a record of the crying

Start where the psalms start, which is much further down than most people expect.

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?Psalm 56:8

Three images, and none of them is advice. A God who counts the times you have paced. A bottle for tears, which is the strangest and tenderest picture in the psalms, because nobody keeps a thing unless it is worth keeping. And a book, with the same contents written down twice, as though once were not enough.

You are held by a God who keeps a record of what you have cried over. Scripture says He puts your tears in His bottle and writes your wanderings in His book, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that specific rather than poetic: not tears in general, not the sorrows of the world, but the fourteen months and the tracked card and the phone face up on the arm of a chair.

Nothing about this has been unwitnessed. It has been unspoken, which is a different thing entirely, and you have been carrying it alone in a way that God has not been asking of you.

You have permission to hope without predicting. Paul writes that hope which is seen is not hope, for what a man sees, why does he yet hope for it, and that if we hope for what we do not see then we wait for it with patience, Romans 8:24 and 25, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that a living thing rather than a resignation. Christian hope has never been a forecast. It is not a claim about what happens next.

That matters here more than anywhere, because the two things get tangled and the tangle does real damage. If hope means predicting she comes back, then every quiet week is evidence against your hope, and you are left grading your own faith by another person's decisions. That is an unbearable arrangement and it is not the one you were given.

What is actually in your hands

Let me say the hardest thing plainly, because it has been in the room since the first paragraph and it needs saying by somebody other than you.

You are not the reason for this silence.

You were never handed the responsibility for another adult's choices. God pities us like a father pities his children, for He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, Psalm 103:13 and 14, and there is nothing in the way He handles you that resembles the audit you have been running on yourself since last spring. The Holy Spirit does not prosecute a parent for a grown child's quiet.

I am not going to pretend nothing was ever imperfect, because you were a human being raising a human being and there is no other kind. But an imperfect three years is a description of every family that has ever existed, and it does not account for this, and the endless sifting has not produced an answer because there may not be a single findable thing to produce. You have been searching for a cause so that you could have something to act on. That is not vanity. That is love with nowhere to put itself.

You have a place in this and it is prayer, not management. Be careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God, Philippians 4:6, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a request from a kitchen table into the actual presence of God, where it goes on being carried long after you have stopped being able to hold it.

That is your work. Not strategy, not the right message, not finding the sentence that unlocks it. You are permitted to write, and to send a card, and to keep the door open, and all of that is good. But you are not the manager of this and you never were, and the relief in that is real if you can let it be.

You are being carried through a wait you did not choose. Even to your old age I am He, and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear, Isaiah 46:4, and the Spirit is the one who makes that promise land on a woman in her sixties standing at a table with a fourth place set.

I know something about unresolved things, in the way that anybody who writes music knows it. There are pieces that ought to end on the chord that closes them and do not, because closing them would be a lie about where the thing actually is. Leaving a chord open is not failure and it is not defeat. It is a piece that is waiting, honestly, in the key it is actually in.

Your table is an open chord. It is not a wound being picked at. It is not denial. It is a woman keeping a place laid because the place is real, and there is nothing pathological in it and nothing to be talked out of.

The breakthrough

Hope is not a forecast.

Read that again, because everything in you has been treating it as one, and the treating is what has made it so heavy to carry. You have been holding a prediction you have no way to make, and calling the weight of it faith, and then feeling the weight increase every week the phone stays quiet.

You have hope that is an anchor and not a prediction. Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, Hebrews 6:19, and an anchor is not a forecast about the weather. It holds regardless of the weather, in water nobody can see the bottom of, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a soul steady on it through a long silence.

So I am not going to tell you she comes back. I do not know, and anybody who says they do is selling you something, and you have been offered that already by people who meant well and it did not help.

What I can tell you is what is settled. God has your tears in a bottle and your wanderings in a book. He has never once handed you the bill for another person's choices. He carries the ones He has made, to gray hair and beyond, exactly as Isaiah 46:4 says, and the Holy Spirit has been carrying you through fourteen months in which you have looked, from the outside, entirely fine.

And the fourth place at that table is not a foolish thing. It is hope, small and set out weekly with your own hands, and small is what hope looks like on an ordinary day.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at that table. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing to speak them was given to you and does not depend on anything changing this week. Scripture is what they rest on and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, and the third turns and speaks straight to God, since He is the one holding what you cannot. Nothing here commands anybody's will and nothing here predicts an outcome: however He answers, and whatever the next year holds, the wait is His to bear and the hope is His to keep alive in you.

  1. Silence at the end of this table, you are not the last word over my family and you are not a verdict on my house. Scripture says He puts my tears in His bottle and writes my wanderings in His book, and in the name of Jesus I hand you to the One who keeps that record.
  2. Fear that I am the cause of this quiet, you have had fourteen months of my nights and you are getting no more of them. It is written that He knows my frame and remembers that I am dust, and the Holy Spirit does not prosecute a mother for a grown child's choices. In the name of Jesus, go.
  3. Lord, You are the One who carries what He has made, to gray hair and beyond, and I thank You out loud for carrying me through this one. Scripture says the hope we have is an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and You have held that anchor through every quiet Sunday of these fourteen months.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
