Quiet HopeIsaiah 42:3

The Size of the Thing You Still Hope For

This message is for a hope that has shrunk to something very small, and being ashamed of how small it now is

It is the end of the evening and somebody says the sentence.

"Before we go, is there anything anybody wants prayer for?"

And the room does what rooms do. There is a pause with coats in it. Somebody mentions an operation coming up for a relative, and gives the date, and everybody nods and writes it down. Somebody else says a word about a job, carefully, the way people speak about jobs when they are not sure how much they are allowed to say. A woman asks for a neighbor by first name only. It is a good room. Nobody in it is performing.

And while all that is happening, you are running your list.

You do it fast, the way you would go through a drawer looking for one thing. And every item on the list comes back the same way. The big ones are too big for a room with the chairs already half stacked: you cannot start that here, you would need an hour and you would not get through it, and somebody would want to hug you and you would rather they did not. And the small ones are too small. That is the honest word for it. You look at them and you think, I am not taking this room's time with that.

So you say nothing, and you help with the chairs, and you are one of the first out.

Then, in the car, with the engine on and the seatbelt not yet done up, the true one arrives. It always waits until then.

You would like to sleep through one night.

That is it. That is the whole of it. Not a healing, not a reversal, not a door opening or a name being cleared or years being given back. One night. Or perhaps yours is a different one: an ordinary Thursday where nothing has to be managed. A phone that rings and it turns out to be nothing. One conversation with somebody in your family where nobody is careful. To be able to look forward to something on a Tuesday.

And the shame comes in behind it so fast that the two arrive almost together.

Because you remember what you used to pray. You can remember praying enormous things and meaning them, and asking for a whole city once, and having a page of it. And now the entire hope you are carrying would fit on the back of a receipt, and you know exactly how far the ground has moved, and you have decided somewhere along the line that the size of it is the evidence. Evidence that you have stopped believing. Evidence that something in you has gone out.

That is the thing being answered here, and it is going to be answered straight, without a joke anywhere in it, because there is nothing funny in this and pretending otherwise would be a way of not looking at it.

The Size of the Thing You Still Hope For

The smallest fire in Scripture

There is a set of songs in the middle of Isaiah about somebody who is coming, and the first of them opens with God pointing at Him and saying: behold my servant, whom I uphold. Then, before anything about power, before anything about what He will accomplish, there is this.

A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.Isaiah 42:3

Take the second image, because it is the one that belongs to you tonight.

Flax was the wick. Cheap fiber, twisted, sitting in the oil of a small clay lamp, and when the oil ran low or the wick burned down, it stopped giving light and gave smoke instead. That is what smoking flax is. Not a lamp burning badly. A lamp that has effectively gone out, with a thread of smoke coming off it, in the last few seconds before there is nothing at all.

It is the smallest possible unit of fire. You cannot have less than that and still have any.

And of all the things Heaven could have chosen to say about the coming Servant before anything else, it says: that one, He does not put out.

Not He relights it in front of a crowd. Not He replaces it with a better lamp. The word is quench, and He does not do it. In a house where somebody was clearing up, the smoking wick is the obvious thing to pinch out; it smells, it gives nothing, it is finished, and pinching it out is simply tidiness. He goes past it and He leaves it burning.

You are not being assessed on the size of what is left. Scripture puts the smallest fire in the house under the direct protection of the Servant of God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a small thing alight in a person for years without anybody, including that person, being able to see how. The thread of smoke is not your failure. In this passage it is the thing He specifically came near to.

Nothing about the shrinking is what you think it is

Be exact about how a hope gets small, because the accusation running underneath all of this is not accurate, and inaccuracy is what gives it its power.

A hope shrinks under weight. That is all. It is what happens to anything that has been carried a long way: it gets carried closer to the body. The person praying for a city and the person praying for one night's sleep are frequently the same person, ten years apart, and the difference between them is not that faith drained away. It is that one of them has been holding something heavy for a decade, and the other one had not started yet.

You have been carrying something for a long time, and that is what the size of this is telling anybody who can read it. The written word says He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, and the Holy Spirit is named as the helper of our weakness rather than its inspector, so the shrinking is read in Heaven as a load-bearing report and never as a verdict on you. It says how long. It does not say who you are.

And there is a second inaccuracy in there worth taking out.

A small hope is not a small faith. Faith is not measured by the scale of what is asked for; if it were, the man asking for a city would outrank the man asking for his sight, and in the gospels it goes precisely the other way. Jesus was repeatedly stopped in the road by people asking for one specific, small, personal thing, and He never once suggested they should have thought bigger.

You have never been told to enlarge a request before it qualifies. Scripture has Him asking a blind man on a road what he wanted done for him, which is a question that invites the small and exact answer, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a believer the boldness to give it. The receipt in your hand is a legitimate document. It was always allowed to be that short.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a large one, because a large one would be no use to you tonight.

Say the small thing out loud. That is the whole of it. Not to a room, not to anybody who will want to fix it, and not with the apology attached. Just the thing itself, said once, in a voice, in a room, so that it exists somewhere other than in the car on the way home.

And say it without the three clauses you always add. Not "it is silly, but". Not "I know other people have far worse". Not "it is not important, really". Those three are not humility. They are a way of getting the sentence out while making sure nobody, including God, is required to take it seriously, and you have been doing it so long it sounds like manners.

You have a Servant of God standing over the last thread of smoke in your house, and He has never once reached out to pinch it. Scripture says He does not quench the smoking flax, and Matthew quotes that verse over Jesus Himself in the middle of a crowd of small, specific, unimpressive requests, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept your thread alight through years when you had nothing to feed it with. Nothing about the size of it changes what He does with it.

Now hear what this is not, because you have been promised things before by people who meant well.

Nothing here says the night comes. Nothing here says the Thursday arrives, or the phone rings with nothing on it, or the conversation happens, or that anything in your circumstances moves at all. That is His, entirely, and He answers in His own way and in His own time, and no one has the right to tell you otherwise or to put a date on Him.

What is settled is what He does with the smoke. He does not put it out. He never has. And the fact that there is still something in you small enough to be ashamed of is itself the evidence that He has not.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on your own, sitting down. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak this is yours already, and it has not shrunk by one inch in the years that everything else did. Scripture is what these lines rest on and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, so they are not a technique and they are not a form of words. Whatever He does with the thing you are still hoping for is His to decide, and however He answers it, what is said here is true tonight.

  1. Room where nobody asked and I said nothing, your quiet is not the measure of what I still want. Scripture says He does not break a bruised reed or quench the smoking flax, and in the name of Jesus I say the small true thing out loud.
  2. Shame that says a hope this small is proof I gave up, your verdict is overturned and I am handing it back tonight. The written word puts the Servant of God standing over the last thread of smoke in the house, and He has never once called it too little to guard.
  3. My God, You never measured the size of it and You never asked me to make it bigger. I thank You, because You keep the smallest fire in this house, and You do not put it out.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
