The Honest WalkHebrews 7:25

Gone Before the Car Park

This message is for saying I will be praying for you and forgetting before you reach the car park

You said it in the corridor, and you meant it with your whole chest.

She had told you about the scan, and her voice had done the thing voices do when a person has decided not to cry in a public place, and you put your hand on her arm and said the six words. I will be praying for you. And in that moment it was not a formula and it was not filler. You would have knelt down on that carpet tile if the corridor had been empty.

Then somebody needed the door you were standing in front of. Then the woman with the rota wanted to know about the second Sunday in November. Then your youngest appeared with a paper plate of biscuit crumbs and a question about whether you can eat a biscuit that has been on the floor. Then the car park, the boot, the shopping that had been in the boot since yesterday, an argument about a seatbelt, a roundabout, and the sudden clear memory that there is nothing in the house for tea.

And it is gone. Not deprioritized. Not postponed. Gone, the way a name goes when somebody says it once at a party.

You do have a system, in fairness. There is a note on your phone. It says, in full: Margaret hip. Couple, job thing. D, scan Tues. There are seventeen entries and four of them you can no longer decode. There is one that just says pray for the thing, which was written by a person who was certain at the time that she would remember the thing.

The real moment, though, is the one two weeks later. She finds you by the tea urn and she says thank you for praying, it really helped, and she means it, and you say of course, and something small and cold goes through you while your face is still doing the warm thing. Because you did not. And she is thanking you. And now you are standing beside her holding a plastic cup, being thanked for something that did not happen, and you cannot possibly say so at that exact moment without making her grief about your admin.

This is the gap. Not a scandal, nothing anybody would call you out for, and it never comes up in a sermon. Just a quiet running difference between the person in the corridor and the person on the roundabout, and you are the only one who knows about it.

And here is where I want to stop smiling, because there is something underneath this that has been costing you for a while.

It is not the forgetting that hurts. It is what the forgetting has slowly taught you to think about yourself.

Gone Before the Car Park

I am not going to call this a lie

Let me say that plainly first, because I suspect it has been half called one in your own head for years.

A lie is a thing you say while knowing it is not so. You did not know it was not so. You said a true sentence about your own heart, and then it met a Tuesday, and the Tuesday was very full, and your memory is not a spiritual organ, it is a small human thing that also has to hold a school pick up, a password, and where you put the paperwork. What broke was not your integrity. It was your recall.

I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this article that makes you the villain, and I am not writing that one. Think about what actually happened in that corridor: somebody stopped when she could have kept walking, put a hand out, asked the question and stayed for the answer. That is not nothing. There are a great many people who never say the six words at all, because saying them costs three minutes and starts a conversation.

But it does need naming, because unnamed things grow in the dark, and this one has been growing in a particular direction. Shame does something specific and predictable: it makes you avoid. So you start being slightly less available in corridors. You keep the conversation lighter. You do not ask how the scan went, in case she asks anything back. And that, not the unprayed prayer, is the actual damage, and it happens so gradually that nobody in the building notices, including you.

You are not two people, and the gap between the corridor and the car has never once made you a fraud. Scripture says the Lord knoweth our frame and remembers that we are dust, which is not an insult, it is a Father's honest account of what He made, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that into a person who has been quietly filing herself under hypocrite for two years.

Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.Hebrews 7:25

Sit with the middle of that sentence for a moment, because it answers the thing your conscience has actually been asking.

Her name did not fall on the floor of the car park.

He never dropped what you dropped

That is the part I would want somebody to say to me. The prayers you promised and did not pray were not the only thing standing between that woman and God. There is One at the right hand who ever liveth to make intercession, and He was making it while the car was reversing out of the space, and He has not stopped since, and He did not need a note on a phone to remember which one she was.

You have an Intercessor who has never once forgotten a name, and the whole weight of that room was never carried on your memory. Hebrews 7:25 puts the ever living and the interceding in Him, not in you, and the Holy Spirit is described as the one who Himself makes intercession with groanings that cannot be uttered, so the prayer you lost was being prayed in two directions before you got to the roundabout.

Now hear what I am not saying, because this is exactly where a person could take a comfort and use it as a shrug. He carries it, so it does not matter. It does matter. Not because heaven was waiting on you, but because a person is made for the thing they keep meaning to do, and a promise kept is one of the few ways love gets a body.

You were given real work to do with your mouth, and the ability to do it is not being withheld from you. Scripture says the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much, and it is written of ordinary people, not specialists, and the Spirit is the one who prompts a name back into a mind at a red light and makes six seconds in a stationary car into intercession.

Which brings us to the only fix I have ever seen actually work, and it is embarrassingly simple.

Pray it there. In the corridor. Out loud, quietly, with your hand still on her arm, before either of you moves.

Not a performance, not a paragraph. Ten seconds. God, You see her, You know about Tuesday, and we are asking You for that scan. Then the amen, and then whatever was going to happen next happens next. Nobody has ever once been offended by it in my hearing, and I have watched a great many people be caught completely off guard by it, in the way a person is caught off guard by being handed something they thought they would have to ask for.

You have permission to pray on the spot, and it is not reserved for people with a title. His word says where two are gathered in His name He is in the midst, and it names no venue and no qualification, and the Spirit is the one who makes a strip of corridor carpet into the place where it actually happened.

The breakthrough

The gap closes from the side you did not expect. Not by improving your memory. By moving the prayer to the moment.

Everything about this has been arranged around a delay: you receive a burden in a corridor, you agree to carry it out to the car, you drive it home, and somewhere on the way it slips out of a pocket. Take the delay out and there is nothing left to drop. That is the whole mechanism, and it turns the most reliably broken promise in church life into the most reliably kept one.

And the shame goes with it, which matters more than the admin does. You will not be the woman by the tea urn being thanked for something that did not happen. You will be the woman who prayed in a corridor and does not have to remember it, because it was finished at the time.

You have been forgiven the gap, and it was dealt with long before you noticed it. Scripture says if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and there is not one clause in it about improving first, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies it to the exact thing you have never said out loud about yourself.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Christ is in you and His righteousness is yours, so the standing to speak like this was given to you rather than earned by a good week. Scripture is what these lines rest on and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, and the outcome is His: however He answers for the people whose names you have lost, He has been holding every one of them.

  1. Corridor promise I never got to, your work as evidence is finished. Scripture says He ever liveth to make intercession, so in the name of Jesus I hand you and every name I lost in that car park to the One who has been holding them all along.
  2. Fear that I am two people, one in the corridor and one in the car, you do not name me and you do not get my Sundays. God knows my frame and remembers that I am dust, and in the name of Jesus I put you out of my prayer life.
  3. Lord, You ever live to make intercession, and the name I lost never once left Your mouth. I thank You, because You keep asking for her whether or not I remember to, and there is room this afternoon for me to begin again.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
