There is a face. You know the one I mean.
It is not unkind. That is what makes it impossible to be angry about. It is the face of somebody who loves you, who has heard this particular hope from you before, and it arrives in three parts. A small softening around the eyes. A breath in through the nose. Then the head goes over, about ten degrees, to one side.
And you know what comes after the tilt.
Sometimes it is "well, you never know", said gently, which is the kindest way anybody has ever told you they have stopped expecting it. Sometimes it is the pivot, warm and immediate, straight on to how work is going. And sometimes it is the practical one, from the person who loves you most and is trying hardest to protect you: I just do not want you getting your hopes up.
Nobody in that room means you any harm. Every single one of them would drive through the night for you.
So you stopped saying it.
Not in one go. First you stopped saying it to the ones who tilt. Then to the ones who go practical. Then there was a Sunday when somebody asked how you were doing, and you gave the short version, the tidy one, and it was not until you were in the car afterwards that you noticed you had left it out completely. It had not cost you anything to leave out. That was the part that stayed with you on the drive home.
You still hope it. That has not changed at all.
It is there at ten to five in the morning. It is there when you are in the wrong aisle in the supermarket and something on a shelf ambushes you. It is there when a form asks a question with a box next to it. It is there when somebody else's news arrives, and you are glad, genuinely glad, and something underneath the gladness turns over.
The hoping is intact. It is only the telling that stopped.
And it happened so quietly that there was never a moment to point at. No decision, no announcement, no falling out with anybody. Just a sentence you used to say and do not say now, and a room full of people who love you and do not know it is missing.
If you have one of these, you did not need my description. It arrived the moment I said "the face". You already know which hope it is, and roughly how long it has been since you last said it out loud to a human being.
I am not going to be clever about this one. This piece is going to walk slowly.

Nobody made you carry it silently, and it got heavy anyway
Let us be fair to everybody in that room first, because they deserve it.
The tilt is not contempt. It is what a person does when they love you and have watched you be disappointed before and cannot bear to be part of it happening again. It is a kind of shielding, badly aimed. The one who says do not get your hopes up is usually the one who sat with you last time, and who is not brave enough to sit with you a second time and does not know how to say that.
So no villains. And yet look at what it produced.
The hope went underground. It did not shrink, it did not die, it just stopped having any air, and a hope with no air becomes something a person manages alone. That is the ache in this, and it is a specific ache: not the waiting itself, which has long since been made peace with, but the loneliness of the waiting, which nobody has ever offered to share because nobody knows there is anything to share.
Something else happened in the going quiet, and it is worth naming. Somewhere in there, the hope started being treated as a prediction.
That is the confusion at the bottom of all of this. When you said it out loud, people heard a forecast. They heard you claiming that a thing was going to happen, and they tilted their heads because they were not sure it would, and part of you started to agree with them, and so the sentence became something you could no longer say without evidence.
But you were never making a forecast. You were saying what you want. Those are entirely different acts, and only one of them requires proof.
You are not naive for still wanting it after this long. Scripture has a man turning to his own soul and telling it to wait only upon God, which is a sentence written by somebody who had been waiting long enough to need to say it out loud to himself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that voice recognizable to a person doing the same thing at ten to five in the morning.
My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.Psalm 62:5
Read where he puts the expectation. Not on a date. Not on a mechanism. Not on the thing arriving in the shape he had in mind. From Him. The source is named, and the schedule is not.
What hope actually is, and what it never promised to be
Hope has been badly defined for you, probably by well meaning people, and the definition is what is making it so heavy to hold.
For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.Romans 8:24
You were never required to see it in order to hope for it. Scripture says outright that a hope you can already see is not hope at all, which makes the invisibility of yours the ordinary condition of the thing rather than a fault in you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the patience the verse mentions in the same breath, so that the waiting is not something you have to generate on your own.
That verse quietly destroys the accusation you have been living under. If hope required a visible outcome, then everybody in Scripture who hoped was a fool right up until the moment they were not.
And here is where the anchor gets put down, and I want to be careful and exact, because this is the place where writing like this usually goes wrong.
Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.Hebrews 6:19
Notice where the anchor is. It is not lodged in the outcome. It is inside the veil, in the presence of God, in the place where Jesus has gone as our forerunner. An anchor holds a boat because it is set into ground the storm cannot move, and the ground here is not your circumstances at all.
You have a hope fastened somewhere your circumstances cannot reach. Hebrews 6:19 puts the anchor within the veil rather than in any earthly outcome, which means the thing holding you steady is not the arrival of what you want, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a soul fastened there through years of nothing visible changing.
So I am not going to tell you that it happens. I do not know, and neither does anybody who has ever tilted their head at you, and the people who speak with confidence about other people's outcomes are spending your trust to fund their own certainty.
What I can hand you is what is actually settled: He is your portion, your expectation is from Him, and the anchor is set in ground that no news, no scan, no letter and no silence has any authority over.
You are held by a God who calls Himself your portion while the waiting is still going on. Scripture says the Lord is my portion, therefore will I hope in Him, and the therefore in that sentence runs from who He is rather than from what has arrived, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a line like that hold weight at four in the morning.
The sentence is allowed back in the air.
Not because saying it out loud makes anything arrive. It does not, and I will not pretend otherwise. But because the hope was never yours to hide, and the silence around it has been costing you something separate from the waiting itself, and the God on the other end of that sentence does not tilt His head.
That is the difference in the room. Every human being who loves you is doing arithmetic while you talk, working out how to hold you if it does not come, and none of them can help it. He is not doing arithmetic. He knows the whole shape of it already, He is not braced, and He has never once needed you to lower the sentence before saying it to Him.
You are welcome to bring it in exactly the words you actually use, without smoothing them first. Scripture says to come boldly to the throne of grace to find help in time of need, and boldly is the word chosen there rather than carefully, and the Holy Spirit is the one described as helping us in our weakness when we do not know how to put it.
So say it to Him. Say the real one, the version with the specific detail in it that you would never say to a room. He is not going to tell you not to get your hopes up.
Declare this over yourself
Say these three out loud, sitting down, on your own. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak like this was given to you and does not wait on evidence anybody can see. Scripture is what these lines rest on and the Holy Spirit is what makes them more than a sound in a quiet room. Whatever He does with the thing you are hoping for is His to decide and stays His, and however He answers, your expectation is from Him.
- Face people make when I say it out loud, you are ten degrees of somebody else's fear and you do not get to decide what I am allowed to want. Scripture says my expectation is from Him, and in the name of Jesus I take my sentence back off the table.
- Fear that hoping this long has made a fool of me, you have been editing my words for years and you are dismissed. Scripture says hope that is seen is not hope, so waiting for what I cannot see is the definition of the thing rather than my failure at it. In the name of Jesus, you do not speak for me any more.
- Lord, my expectation is from You and it has never once been from the timing. I thank You, because You call Yourself my portion while I am still waiting, and my anchor is inside the veil where nothing in my circumstances can reach it.
