Two Seconds With Your Eyes Open

This message is for confidence for a young believer surrounded by people who do not share it

The canteen is loud in a way that gets into the teeth.

Four hundred people under a hard ceiling, trays going along metal runners, and somewhere behind her a bench leg dragging across the floor for a full second and a half before somebody sits down on it. She comes through with her tray held level, the way you learn to hold one, and she finds the seat she always finds, second table in from the window, back to most of the room. Her friends have left her the gap on the end. They always do, without discussing it, which is one of the small kindnesses of being fifteen.

And then her hands stop.

It is not even a pause, not really. It is about two seconds, and she fills it by moving the tray a centimetre to the left, which she has been doing for so long that from any angle it looks precisely like a person straightening a tray. Her eyes stay open. Her head goes no lower than it would go to look at her food. And somewhere inside those two seconds she says thank you to God for a jacket potato, the way she has said it since she was four years old at a table with a plastic cup, and then the fork is up and she is back in the conversation before anybody has finished a sentence.

Nobody has ever noticed. Not once, not in years. She has got it down to a length that fits neatly between other people's words, and if you asked her about it she would go red to the ears, because she is fairly certain the word for it is cowardice. She has never had that argument out with herself properly. To have it out she would have to say the whole thing aloud, and there is nobody to say it to.

You know the two seconds.

Maybe yours is not a tray. Maybe yours is the flat voice you have trained for the word church, pitched exactly so that it does not invite a second question. Maybe it is the little cross you wear on the inside of your shirt, not because you are ashamed of it, but because you have genuinely never worked out how to have the conversation that the outside of your shirt would start. Whatever your version is, you have it timed, and nobody has ever caught you.

And you are the only one. You know exactly how alone you are in it, because you have done the arithmetic more than once, in the building and out of it. Nearest person your age who would understand a word of this: nobody at that table, nobody in your year, and on a Sunday it jumps straight from you to somebody in their late twenties with a baby on their hip. You have never said that out loud either. Saying it out loud would turn it into a complaint, and you are not complaining. You are just the only one your age still turning up, and you cannot really explain why you do.

Two Seconds With Your Eyes Open

The only lunch on the hillside

And you are seen in a room where nobody is looking. Scripture says the Lord looketh on the heart, and the Spirit is the one who has been in that canteen every lunchtime for two seconds at a time.

Let me say the weight before I say anything else, because you have carried it a long time and nobody has ever weighed it with you.

It is not the being alone that costs the most. It is the constant, low, background editing. Deciding, forty times a day, at speed, how much of yourself is safe to leave visible in this particular room. Rounding your answers down. Hearing a joke about people like you and choosing your face carefully. It is exhausting in a way that does not look like anything from the outside. And underneath it there is a suspicion that has grown quietly for years: that everyone in your life, including possibly you, is being patient with something they expect you to grow out of. Nobody has ever used the word to your face. That is what makes it hard to fight. You cannot argue with a sentence nobody said.

So look at a crowd for a minute, and look at who is in it.

There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?John 6:9

Thousands of people on a hillside at the end of a long day, and every one of them arrived with nothing. One person in that entire crowd had thought to bring food, and that person was the youngest one in the sentence. Not a leader, not a teacher, not one of the twelve. A young person with a bag.

Now read the second half of the line, because that is the part you will recognize. It is a question, and it is arithmetic. What are they among so many. That is not cruelty and it is not unbelief. That is a sensible man doing sensible sums out loud and arriving at the only answer the sums permit. The count was completely accurate. The conclusion drawn from it was completely wrong, and the two sat side by side in one sentence.

And then watch what Jesus does with the small thing. He does not send anyone back for more. He does not apologize for the size of it. He takes what a young person carried in, gives thanks over it, and the crowd eats until it has had enough, with baskets left over. The only supplies on that hill came out of the bag of the youngest one there, and heaven did not treat that as a shortfall.

There is a letter in Scripture written to a young man who was being looked past, and it does not tell him to be patient and wait his turn. It tells him that nobody is to look down on his youth, and then, in the very next breath, it hands him the job: be the example, in word, in life, in love, in faith, in purity. Nobody hands a rehearsal a commission.

The breakthrough

Count the two seconds again.

Nobody makes you do it. Nobody would ever know if you stopped, and I mean that precisely: there is not one person in that canteen who would notice a difference tomorrow. There has never been anybody to perform it for.

Which means there is only one Person it has ever been for, and He has been at that table every single day for years.

And you are not a smaller believer for being quiet in a loud room. Scripture says God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind, and the Spirit named there is already in you rather than issued later for good behavior.

You have been calling those two seconds cowardice. Some of it is fear, probably, and I am not going to flatter you by pretending otherwise. But fear does not build a habit that lasts four years. Fear is loud and lazy and it gives up the moment the pressure lifts. What you have is quieter and far more stubborn, and it has kept going with no audience, no encouragement and no reward. A borrowed faith cannot do that. Borrowed things have to be shown to somebody or they stop being worth carrying. Yours has run for years with the door shut.

And you have a faith that is yours, not a stage you are passing through. His word says ye are come to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and it says ye, present tense, about people who had not finished anything yet, and the Spirit is the one who makes that true at fifteen.

And that is the answer you have never been able to find when somebody calls it a phase. A phase can be explained. That is precisely how you know it is one: it has reasons, and reasons run out. You have no reasons left that would survive ten minutes with your friends, and you are still there, still doing your two seconds, still turning up on a Sunday to a room where the next youngest person is twelve years older than you. Something is holding you that you did not put there and cannot argue yourself out of. You have been reading that as the weak part of your faith. It is the load-bearing part.

And you were counted before you started counting. Scripture says the Lord knoweth them that are His, and the knowing runs the other way round from your tally, and the Spirit is the one who makes a name on His list steadier than a headcount in a canteen.

Now the arithmetic. Your count is not wrong, and I want to be clear about that, because if I tell you the room is fuller than it looks you will know I am guessing, and you have had enough of adults who guess. You genuinely are the only one your age at that table and in that building this year. Nobody can promise you that it changes, and I am not going to.

What I will tell you is what the hillside says. Accurate counting and true conclusions are two different operations, and heaven has never once used the size of a thing to decide what it was worth doing with. The sums said what are these among so many. The bag got opened anyway.

And the thing that ends being the only one is not a crowd arriving. It never is. It is one person knowing.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice, at whatever volume the room you are in allows. Nothing here is a formula: Scripture is what these lines stand on and the Holy Spirit is what carries them. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is not a junior membership with the good part held back: the standing to speak was given to you on the day you believed, at the age you are right now, and nobody is holding it in trust until somebody decides you have been serious for long enough. What He asks for is smaller than you have been led to believe, and He put the whole weight of it somewhere you have not been looking. Not on the size of your faith, and not on how well you can explain it. On whether it gets said out loud at the thing in the way, instead of thought quietly in its direction. Your mountain is the sentence that runs through you every lunchtime, the one that says you are the only one and this will wear off you the way everything else does. Speak to that one. What He does with the room afterwards is His to decide, and however He answers, the faith in you at that table today was already given and is already yours.

  1. Phase, you are a name other people reach for when they have not got a better one, and you have never once fitted what is in me. Scripture tells a young believer that no one is to look down on his youth, and then in the same breath it hands him the work of being the example in word, in life, in love and in faith. In the name of Jesus I answer to the commission and not to the label.
  2. Count that says I am the only one, you are arithmetic and you are not authority. Scripture says five barley loaves and two small fishes came into a crowd of thousands in the bag of the youngest one there, and Jesus gave thanks over them and there was enough and baskets to spare. Under His hands you go, small number, along with everything else I am carrying.
  3. Lord, You have watched me say thank You over hundreds of lunches in a room where nobody else was saying it, and You have never once needed a witness for it to count. I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit has kept the faith You put in me running for years now with no audience at all, and a thing that keeps going when nobody is watching plainly belongs to the One it was always for. Jesus, You are the reason my head goes down over a tray, and today I am glad to say so where I can hear myself.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
