The Prayer That Got Shorter

In the beginning, the bedtime prayer was enormous.

It was enormous because a four year old had worked out something that four year olds work out independently, all over the world, without ever comparing notes: that a prayer is the one part of bedtime an adult is contractually unable to hurry. And so the prayer expanded to fill the available legal loophole. God bless Mummy. God bless Daddy. God bless Nana and Grandad and the other Nana. God bless my teacher. God bless the boy at the party. God bless the dog we saw. God bless the dog we saw the day before that. God bless the man who fixed the boiler.

And you would stand there, one hand on the door frame, doing the arithmetic on how many named individuals were still outstanding, and thinking: this is lovely and I am dying inside.

Then it got shorter.

Nobody shortened it. It just compressed, the way things compress. The list became a category. Everybody in this house and everybody we love. Then it became a formula, the same eleven words, said at speed. Then it became a mumble into a pillow with the good ear covered. Then it became a thing said from the doorway, over a shoulder, with the landing light already going off.

Then there was a Tuesday when it did not happen. And nobody mentioned it.

That is the part that catches you, if it catches you at all: not a decision, not an argument, not a crisis of faith at the top of the stairs. A Tuesday. And then a Thursday. And then a fortnight, and then it had been a term, and nobody in the house has said a word about it because nobody in the house has consciously registered it, except you, at eleven at night, when the thought arrives out of nowhere and sits down heavily on your chest.

We used to pray at bedtime and now we do not.

And underneath that, the harder sentence, the one that has your name in it: I let it go. Whatever else this household is, it was supposed to be a house where that happened, and it stopped on my watch, and I did not even notice it going.

You will not get any guilt from me. There is enough of that in the room already and it has been doing all the talking. This one is yours.

Nobody was marking it

Start with what Jesus actually says about prayer that has got shorter, because He says something about it directly and it is not what an anxious parent expects.

Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.Matthew 6:8

The context is length. He has just said that people think they are heard for their much speaking, and He tells His friends not to do it that way, and the reason He gives is that the Father already knows. Length was never the currency. The lists, the categories, the eleven words, the mumble into the pillow: none of them were being weighed by volume at the other end.

You are not behind on something God is grading. Scripture puts the Father's prior knowledge underneath the whole practice of prayer, which means the family that prayed for nine minutes and the family that managed four words were never on different rungs, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as relief rather than as a technicality.

I want to be careful here, because there is a bad version of this that says the bedtime prayer did not matter. It did. Something real was happening in that doorway, and something real is missing now, and I am not going to talk you out of noticing it.

But notice what actually stopped. A habit stopped. A habit is a good thing and habits are how houses carry anything at all. What did not stop is the standing of that household before God, because the standing was never resting on the habit.

You have a household God is already in, in the state it is actually in. Christ in you the hope of glory is written to ordinary people in ordinary houses, Colossians 1:27, and the Holy Spirit does not wait in the hallway for the routine to be restored before He comes in. He has been in your kitchen through the whole term you are worried about.

What you were never carrying

Here is a load that got handed over without anybody agreeing to pick it up: the idea that your children's faith runs on your consistency.

It does not. It cannot. Nobody's does.

You were never the source of your children's faith, and you were never meant to be. Paul writes that he planted and Apollos watered but God gave the increase, 1 Corinthians 3:6, and there is no arrangement in Scripture where a parent supplies the growth. The Holy Spirit is the one who does the increase in a child, and He was doing it during the long prayers and He has been doing it during the quiet term.

That is not permission to stop caring. It is the removal of a weight that was crushing the caring.

Because here is what the guilt does, and it is worth naming precisely. It does not restart the prayer. It has never once restarted the prayer. Guilt makes the doorway a place of failure, and nobody voluntarily returns to a place of failure at half past seven when they are tired. The thing that actually restarts a habit is not remorse; it is one low stakes attempt that costs nothing if it goes badly.

You have a Father who hears the four word version. The man at the back of the temple got out eight words with his eyes down and went home justified, and the tax collector's prayer is in Scripture precisely because its length was not the point. The Holy Spirit takes a short prayer up the same distance as a long one, at the same speed, with nothing lost in transit.

You are held by a covenant and not by a routine. The mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but my kindness shall not depart from thee, Isaiah 54:10, and that promise was not written to households with good evening structures. The Spirit is the seal on it, and a seal does not come off during a difficult term.
