Family FaithIsaiah 49:16

The Extra Leaf in the Table

This message is for a table where all the grown children have stopped coming, and a mother who has stopped asking them

You still buy for eight.

That is the first thing anybody notices, if anybody is looking, which mostly they are not. The bag of potatoes is the big bag. The chicken is the size of chicken you buy when there is going to be an argument about who gets the last of it. Two of you eat, and one of you is not that hungry these days, and there is a shelf in the freezer with eleven small tubs on it, each with a date on masking tape, and every one of them was cooked in a pan that has only ever known one size.

It freezes. That is the official reason and it is a very good one and nobody has ever challenged it.

Then there is the table.

The table seats six as it stands and ten with the leaf in, and the leaf is in the garage, behind the ladder, wrapped in an old dust sheet, and it has been there for a while now. The two folding chairs went up into the loft the year the boiler was replaced, and everybody agreed at the time that it made sense, because a room is bigger without chairs in it that nobody is sitting on.

And there is the calling round. The Sunday phone calls, done in the same order every week, always second cup of tea in hand, and the questions kept light because light questions travel better.

Here is where the smiling stops, and I am going to stop it deliberately, because the next part deserves a straight face.

You used to ask.

You would get to the end of the call and say it, casually, as though it had just occurred to you: any chance you are about this Sunday. And there would be a pause. Not a rude one. Just the small pause of somebody doing arithmetic at the other end, with the fuel, and the drive, and the Sunday they have, and something they had half planned already, and you learned to hear the whole of that pause inside a single second.

So you stopped asking.

You did not announce it. You did not sulk about it. You just let the question go, one Sunday and then another, until it was not part of the call any more, and now you say lovely to hear you and put the phone down on the side and stand in a very quiet kitchen with your hand still on it.

And you tell yourself that you did it so as not to be a burden. Which is true. It is also true that you did it because a pause costs less than a no.

You know that kitchen. Whether it is grown children, or one child, or a household that came apart in a way nobody planned, or a table that never once looked like the picture you had in your head. The chairs are somewhere. The leaf is somewhere. And the asking stopped a while back, quietly, and nobody but you knows the date.

The Extra Leaf in the Table

What stopped was the asking, not the love

Let me say first what that silence actually is, because it has been badly misread, probably by you.

Stopping the asking was not resignation. It was not bitterness, and it was not giving up on anybody. It was a mother deciding to carry a cost herself rather than hand it to somebody she loves, which is the oldest reflex in her whole body and the same one that got up at three in the morning for years without once being thanked for it. She took the pause off them and put it in her own pocket, week after week, and then she stood in a quiet kitchen with her hand on the phone.

That is love doing something expensive with the lights off. Nobody applauds it because nobody sees it. But something else went quiet at the same time, and this is the part I actually want to reach.

The praying for them got quieter too.

Not stopped. Never stopped. But it shrank down into something you do while doing something else, in the car, at the sink, half a sentence and a swallow, because saying their names out loud in an empty house was more than the house could take on a Tuesday. And somewhere in there a small, terrible thought moved in: that a prayer that thin, said that quietly, by somebody who has stopped even asking, might not be reaching anywhere at all.

So here is the ground under your feet, and it is older and heavier than that thought.

Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.Isaiah 49:16

You are graven, not merely remembered. Isaiah 49:16 is not a promise that God has a good memory, it is a picture of a name cut into a palm, permanent and load bearing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who presses that into a woman who has begun to suspect she is easy to forget.

Graven is a mason's word. It is what people do to stone when they want a thing to outlast them. And the walls, in that verse, are continually before Him. Not reviewed occasionally. Continually. The house you are standing in, with the quiet kitchen and the loft full of chairs, is in front of Him right now with nothing between Him and it.

You have not been demoted from mother because the chairs are in the loft. Scripture never once measures a parent by the attendance at their table, and the Holy Spirit is the one who unhooks a heart from a scoreboard nobody in heaven has ever kept.

He keeps the prayers you stopped saying out loud

There is a verse tucked into the last book of the Old Testament that I think was written for exactly this kitchen.

Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.Malachi 3:16

That thought upon His name. Not preached. Not led. Thought. And a book gets written.

You have a God who keeps a record of the prayers that never made it into words. It is written that a book of remembrance was made for those who simply thought upon His name, so the half sentence at the sink and the swallow in the car went in as fully as anything ever prayed out loud in a full church, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what a heart cannot get past its own throat.

I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this article that would leave you with a promise God has not made, and that is worth nothing to you at eight o'clock on a Sunday.

I am not going to tell you that they come back. Nobody honest can hand you that, and I will not do it. What is settled, what is finished, what has your name cut into it, is not the shape of next Sunday. It is Him, and it is His hold on you, and it is His hearing.

You were never the one holding that family together, and the weight was never yours to carry alone. Scripture says to cast all your care upon Him because He cares for you, and cast is a violent, physical word for getting a thing out of your own arms, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that possible in a woman whose arms have been full since 1987.

You are not praying into an empty room when you say something at that table. Scripture says Christ is at the right hand of God making intercession for us, so there is already a voice in that conversation that never gets tired and never runs out of ways to say it, and the Holy Spirit Himself is described as helping our infirmities and praying through us when we do not know what to ask.

The breakthrough

The table is not the verdict.

It looks like the verdict. It is right there, every day, the exact size of the thing you are afraid of, and a room measures a life very persuasively when there is nobody in it. But a table is furniture. It reports the diary of some adults, and it has never once been able to report whether a mother was faithful, whether a house was full of God, or whether a prayer was heard.

You are held by a God who has your name in His hands and their names in His book, and neither of those depends on a Sunday. Scripture says His walls are continually before Him and that a book of remembrance is written for those who think upon His name, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes those two facts and quietly rebuilds a woman's confidence to speak in her own kitchen.

So put the leaf in, if you want to. Not as a signal to anybody, and not as an act of faith you are hoping God will reward with a full house on Sunday. Put it in because that table is a good place to pray at, and because you are allowed to set a place at it, and because worship does not need a quorum.

Declare this over yourself

Say these three out loud, standing at that table. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak like this was given to you and does not depend on who comes on Sunday. Scripture is what these lines rest on and the Holy Spirit is what makes them more than a sound in an empty house. Whatever He does in your family is His to decide and it stays His, and however He answers, your name is already cut into His hands.

  1. Table with the leaf still in the garage, you are furniture and you do not get to tell me what my family is. Scripture says my walls are continually before God and my name is graven on the palms of His hands, and in the name of Jesus I take my verdict from Him and not from how many places are laid.
  2. Fear that a mother with an empty table has failed at the only thing that counted, you have been living in my kitchen and you are out of it now. Scripture says a book of remembrance is written for those who think upon His name, so every prayer I gave up saying out loud is on record. In the name of Jesus, you do not get the Sunday phone call.
  3. Lord, You know every name I have stopped saying out loud, and You have never needed my asking in order to hold one of them. I thank You, because You graved me on Your palms and You keep my walls continually before You, and this table is Yours before it is anybody else's.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
