Church LifePsalm 56:8

The Ceiling Tile You Always Find

This message is for never letting anybody in that building see you cry, and knowing exactly how to stop it happening

The trick is the ceiling.

Somewhere in the third song, usually just after the key change, the room drops into that hum where nobody is quite singing and everybody is, and somebody near the front says something out loud about being carried. That is the moment. And what happens next is that a head tips back. Not far. Two inches, maybe three, the way a person tips a head back to think about a difficult question. And there it is. The ceiling tile above the second window, the one with the water mark on it shaped like a country nobody has ever named.

Look up, and the eyes drain. It is basic engineering, and it works every single time.

There are others in the kit, obviously, because one tool is not a kit. There is the hard blink, three times, fast. There is the sudden and pressing need to find something at the bottom of a bag. There is the cough. There is singing noticeably louder, because a voice only wobbles audibly when it is quiet, so volume is a kind of camouflage. There is the early walk to the kitchen to get a start on the mugs, which has the enormous advantage of looking like service. And there is the finest instrument in the whole set, deployed only by professionals: taking your glasses off and cleaning them slowly on the hem of your jumper while studying the floor.

Nobody taught anybody this. It got built one Sunday at a time, and it works, and it has never once failed.

Here is the part that is not in the kit. She cries at films. She cried at a supermarket radio in October over a song that is not even about anything. She sat in the car park last spring with the engine off and the keys still in her hand and cried for eleven minutes before she went in, and then she went in with a clear face and asked three people how their week had been and meant every word of it. She is not a woman who cannot cry.

She is a woman who does not cry in there.

And you know the tile. Maybe yours is not a tile. Maybe yours is the tissue already balled up in the coat pocket before you leave the house. Maybe yours is arriving with a job in your hands, so that your hands and your face both have somewhere to be. Maybe yours is putting an arm round somebody else at exactly the moment the song reaches you, because the one doing the comforting is never the one being looked at. Maybe yours is the last verse, which you have learned to hum.

Whatever your version is, it is very good, it is very quiet, and it has cost you more than you have ever added up.

The Ceiling Tile You Always Find

What the toolkit is actually guarding

Let me say the true weight of this out loud first, because the kit is so well made that even the woman running it has stopped calling it work.

Composure is not vanity. That has to be said plainly and said early, because there is a lazy version of this message that treats a self possessed woman in the fourth row as though she were hiding something shameful, and she is not. She is doing something enormously kind and enormously tiring. She is keeping the room easy for everybody in it. She has decided, without ever putting it into words, that her own weather is not going to become anybody else's weather this morning, and then she has paid for that decision out of her own pocket, week after week, for years.

So the kit is not vanity. The kit is guarding a sentence. And the sentence goes: if they see it, they will have to do something about it.

Then somebody will be kind. And the kindness will need a conversation, and the conversation will need an explanation, and the explanation is the one thing there are no words for yet. That is the whole machinery. It is not evasion. It is hospitality with the price tag turned round.

You are already fully seen in that hall, and the seeing was finished long before the tile was ever found. Scripture says God has counted every wandering and put your tears into His bottle, which is not a poetic flourish about a nice feeling, it is a claim about an actual inventory, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a line like that land on a woman who has spent a decade making sure nobody counted anything.

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?Psalm 56:8

A bottle is a strange thing to hand a crying person.

Stay with it, though, because it is not sentimental. It is administrative. Somebody is collecting. Somebody keeps a container for the exact thing that has been so carefully hidden, and a book to write it down in, and there is no filing system in heaven that sorts tears by whether anybody in the building noticed them. The eleven minutes in the car park went into the same bottle as the four seconds under the tile. He did not grade the venue.

You have a God who treats your crying as valuable rather than as a spill to be wiped up. It is written that He keeps them, and kept is a word people use about photographs and letters and the small things they would run back into a burning house for, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that word off the page and puts it where the tissue lives in the coat pocket.

Nobody in that room is grading your face

There is a moment in the Gospels that gets quoted for how short it is, and the shortness is not the point of it. Jesus stood outside a tomb, with a crowd watching Him and a miracle already decided in His own mind, and He wept. He knew what He was about to do. He cried anyway, in public, in front of everybody, and nobody has ever suggested that it made Him less.

Jesus wept.John 11:35

You were never appointed the one who holds the room together. John 11:35 is four syllables of evidence that composure was not the qualification for the job, and the Holy Spirit is the one who presses that home to the person who has quietly assumed for years that her steadiness is the rent she pays on her seat.

And it goes further than permission. The one being worshipped in that hall is not observing your face from a distance and forming a view about it.

You have a High Priest who cannot be embarrassed by a wet face, because He has had one. Scripture says He is not a high priest who cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, which means the ache you are managing is not new information to Him and never required managing in His presence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that from a doctrine into a Sunday morning.

Now, here is where I have to be careful, because I could take one performance off you and hand you another.

I am not asking you to weep in public. A woman who has been told that she must now cry in the fourth row has not been set free, she has been recast, and the new part is harder than the old one. There is no obligation anywhere in this. You are not being asked to perform your feelings for anybody in that building. Scripture says the Lord is near to them that are of a broken heart, and near is a position, not a performance, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a person there whether the face stays dry or does not.

The breakthrough

Nobody in that hall was ever holding the ceiling up. That was one woman, on her own, for years.

Read that again, because a decade of habit will argue with it. There was never a rule about faces. There was no week in which your welcome depended on being the steady one, no quiet agreement that the price of the seat is a dry face, no panel of people who need protecting from your ordinary human weather. The whole arrangement has been running in one heart, and it is exhausting, and it was built out of love rather than out of fear of these people, which is why it has been so hard to put down.

You are free to be comforted in the very room where you have only ever done the comforting. Scripture calls God the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, and the receiving comes first in that sentence, before the passing on of anything to anybody, and the Holy Spirit is named the Comforter precisely because comfort is His office and not yours.

Let it go slack. Not because something has finally been passed, but because there was never an exam. A tear in that room is not a confession, it is not a request, it is not a burden laid on the person next to you. It is water. He collects it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting down, somewhere nobody will interrupt you. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak to a habit this old was given to you long before you ever noticed it, and it is not something the hall has to award. Scripture is what these three lines rest on, and the Holy Spirit is what makes them more than a sound in a room. Whatever He does with the next ten Sundays is His to decide, and however He answers that, the tears already went in the bottle.

  1. Ceiling tile above the second window, you have done a job for years that was never yours to do, and I am taking it back off you this morning. Scripture says God Himself has kept my tears in His bottle and written every one of them in His book, and in the name of Jesus I look straight ahead and let my face do what my face does.
  2. Fear that a wet face would turn me into somebody's project, your lease on my Sundays is up and I am putting you out. I am not a spill to be wiped up. Scripture says the Lord is near to them of a broken heart, so the toolkit goes back in the drawer I found it in.
  3. Lord, You counted every tear I hid in that building and You kept the lot. I thank You, because the crying I have been so careful with turns out to be precious enough to bottle, and You have never once needed me to hold my face together in Your house.
