There is a sofa in that room that somebody's parents donated in about 2019, and it has a specific smell, and everybody knows which cushion is the good one.
There is a table football table with one handle that spins freely and does nothing, which means the entire game is now played with a permanent handicap that both sides have simply accepted as the rules. There is a tin of biscuits of the sort that only ever appears in church buildings, containing the flavours nobody chooses first, in the ratio that proves somebody has been picking out the good ones since roughly February.
And there are four of you.
The chairs get set out in a circle, and the circle is now small enough that it is not really a circle, it is a square with the corners rounded off. Somebody suggests a game. The game is designed for a minimum of eight people. You play it anyway, four of you, with adjustments, and it becomes something that is technically a different game entirely and is honestly quite funny, and the leader with the guitar makes a joke about the World Cup of Four and everybody groans and it is fine.
You cannot hide in a small group discussion with four people. That is worth saying out loud. In a room of fourteen there is a place at the edge where you can nod and look thoughtful and never say anything, and that place does not exist in a room of four. You get asked. Every time. About everything.
It used to be fourteen. You know that, because you can remember where everybody sat.
And they had their reasons, all of them, and this piece is not about them. People move, people get jobs on a Friday, people get busy, people change their minds, and none of it is anybody's to narrate from the outside. That is between them and God and it is not the thing keeping you awake.
The thing keeping you awake is much smaller and much more personal than that. It is the arithmetic. Fourteen went to nine and nine went to six and six went to four, and somewhere in that sequence a question got in that you would not say out loud to anyone: does the number mean something about me?
Like the room is a scoreboard. Like the four of you are the ones who did not get the message. Like turning up on a Friday has become a slightly embarrassing thing to still be doing, and the fact that you keep doing it says something about you that you cannot quite work out.
That question is the one this is for. This one is yours.

Two men and a cliff
There is a moment in Israel's history where the entire national situation turns on two people deciding to walk up a hill.
The army is in trouble. The numbers are bad in a way that is not remotely ambiguous. And a young man called Jonathan looks at the rock face in front of him with nobody but his armourbearer beside him and says a sentence that has never stopped being true.
For there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.1 Samuel 14:6
Read the word restraint. Not preference. Not usually. Restraint, as in: there is no mechanism by which a small number limits God. He is not throttled by attendance. He does not work at a percentage of capacity determined by how many chairs are occupied.
You are not a smaller Christian in a smaller room. Scripture says plainly that there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few, and the Holy Spirit who came down on a hundred and twenty in an upstairs room is the same Holy Spirit in a youth room with four chairs and a broken table football handle.
That is not a consolation prize. Look at the way the numbers actually run in Scripture and it stops being a nice thought and starts being a pattern. An army of thirty two thousand gets reduced to three hundred on purpose, because the size was going to cause a misunderstanding about who won. A prophet is certain he is the only one left and is told about seven thousand he never knew existed. A group of twelve, one of whom is going to leave, is handed the whole thing.
God has never once been impressed by a room count, and He has repeatedly been suspicious of one.
You have been given the same Spirit as the biggest gathering in the country. By one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, and it is written that we have all been made to drink into one Spirit, 1 Corinthians 12:13, so what is in that room on a Friday is not a reduced version of what is anywhere else. The Holy Spirit is not divided into portions by venue: there are four of you and all of Him.
What four in a room actually is
Here is what your number measures. It measures how many people are in the room.
That is the complete list. It does not measure whether your faith is real. It does not measure whether God is at work in your town. It does not measure whether you are the kind of person things happen around, and it certainly does not measure whether you were right to keep coming.
You were chosen, and you are not what was left over. Jesus says: ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you that ye should go and bring forth fruit, John 15:16, and the Spirit is the one who makes a sentence like that land on a seventeen year old sitting on the good cushion rather than staying a nice line about the disciples.
There is a difference between remaining and being remaindered, and the number cannot tell you which one you are. Only the choosing can, and the choosing was done first and was done by Him.
You have a faith that is your own and does not run on the size of the group. The Spirit Himself bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God, Romans 8:16, which means the confirmation is happening at a level no attendance figure reaches. Nobody in that room is holding your faith up for you, and nobody who left took a piece of it with them.
And you should know that four is not a holding pattern. This is not a waiting room where the real thing happens later when the numbers recover. The room of four is a real church, doing real church, on a real Friday. What happens in it is not rehearsal.
You are known by name in a room of four. Fear not, for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine, Isaiah 43:1, and the Holy Spirit does not scale that down for a small venue. You are not addressed as a percentage of a group anywhere in Scripture. The address is always singular and it always uses a name.
Four is not a verdict.
Read that again, because the arithmetic has been arguing the other way for months. There is no scoreboard. Nobody is keeping the score you think is being kept, and the number that has been sitting on your chest is not a measurement of you, your faith, your worth, your future or God's interest in that town.
You have not been left holding something God has moved on from. He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it, Philippians 1:6, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that work going in a person on a Friday night when nothing about the room looks like a work in progress.
And I am not going to hand you the version of this that says the numbers will come back, because I do not know that and neither does anybody else. What I do know is that the room is not the point and never was. The point is the four of you, and the Spirit in the four of you, and the fact that God has done an enormous amount with rooms this size and has said so in writing.
Keep going. Not because it will pay off. Because it is already true.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, on your own, in your room. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that was settled before the numbers changed, so the standing to say these is already yours and no attendance figure grants it or removes it. Scripture is what they rest on and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes them land, and the third one turns and speaks to Jesus Himself, because He is the one who did the choosing here. However He answers, and whatever happens to that room over the next year, the saving is not restrained by how many chairs are full.
- Room of four chairs, you are not a scoreboard and you are not a verdict on me. Scripture says there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few, and in the name of Jesus I stop reading a number as a report on my faith.
- Fear that this number means something about me, you have had months of my Friday nights and you are getting no more of them. Scripture says the Spirit Himself bears witness with my spirit that I am a child of God, and the Holy Spirit does not take attendance before He testifies. In the name of Jesus, go.
- Jesus, You are the One who chose me, and I did not make it onto this list by turning up. I thank You, because You said plainly that we did not choose You but that You chose us and ordained us to bear fruit, and You have never once counted a room before deciding what You would do in it.
