Church LifeGalatians 6:2

Fine, Thanks, and You?

This message is for the answer to how are you that you have given at the door for years without once meaning it

The doors get wedged open at twenty past, and by half past there is a queue of sorts, though nobody standing in it would ever call it a queue.

There is a man on the left with a stack of notice sheets he has counted twice and will count again before the singing starts. There is a woman on the right who has been on that door for eleven years and knows precisely which of the regulars want a handshake and which would rather have a nod, and in eleven years she has not once got that wrong. A tea urn is coming up to temperature somewhere behind them, ticking as it goes. A small boy is going up the ramp on his knees for reasons entirely his own, and his father has decided not to have noticed yet.

Then you come through the door, and the woman on the right says the thing.

"Morning! How are you?"

And out it comes, in the shape it has come out in for years, before you had any part in deciding it.

"Fine, thanks. You?"

Handed straight back like a baton in a relay. She says, "Yes, good, good," and somebody behind you needs the door held, and you are past her and into the hall, and the whole exchange took four seconds. Both of you meant well. Neither of you lied, exactly.

Because there is no room at a door. That is what a door is: the place people move through on the way to somewhere they can stop. Behind you there were six more coming in out of the cold and one of them on crutches, and the sheets want handing out, and the urn wants watching, and the singing starts in nine minutes. Nobody ever built that spot to hold an answer longer than four seconds, and nobody who stands in it is doing a thing wrong. She is not being shallow. She is being kind at the speed a doorway allows, which is a real kindness, and it costs her something to keep offering it week after week after week.

So the four seconds are not the problem, and this is not a piece about greeters.

Here is the bit that is yours.

It lands somewhere on the way home, at the lights, with the indicator going. Not that the answer at the door was small. That the answer at the door is the only size of answer left in the house. Somebody at work asked on Wednesday and got the same four seconds. Somebody who loves you asked on Thursday night and got them too, and they took it, because why would they not. And the strangest part of the whole business is that there was never a morning when it was decided.

That is the ache under this one, and it is not hypocrisy and it is not a scandal. It is a habit that began as good manners and quietly became a wall, and walls built out of good manners are the hardest ones in the world to see.

Fine, Thanks, and You?

Nobody built the doorway for it

Let me set the weight down plainly first, because a thing with no name is always heavier than a thing with one.

The trouble with the four second answer is not that it is dishonest. It is that it works. It keeps a queue moving, it spares a kind woman a conversation she has no space for, it gets a person into their row without a fuss, and it has never once failed anybody. Nothing that works that well ever gets reviewed. It simply runs, week on week, until the muscle that used to give a longer answer has not been asked for anything in about four years and has gone quietly to sleep.

And there is a second thing underneath, which is the one nobody says out loud. Somewhere along the way the short answer started to feel like the price of admission. Not because a single person in that hall ever set that price. Nobody there has said, or thought, that they would rather not know. It is simply that a hall full of people at half past ten is a moving thing, and a moving thing gives off a signal, and the signal a tired man reads off it is: keep up, keep light, keep going.

You are known already, at a depth no doorway was ever built to hold. Scripture says the Lord searched you and knew your sitting down and your rising up and understood your thought long before it had found the shape of a sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line like that off a page and settles it into a man standing in a coat with his car keys still in his hand. Nothing about you was ever waiting on a good enough summary.

That matters more than it sounds. The four second answer is a summary, and a summary is a courtesy, and a courtesy is not a confession. God has never at any point been working from the summary. He has never had to.

You were carried into this family long before the greeting ever became automatic. It is written that He chose you in Him before the foundation of the world and made you accepted in the Beloved, which is a settled thing done at a settled time, and the Spirit is the one who bears witness with your own spirit that the household you walk into on a Sunday is your household. Belonging in that hall was never a fee collected at the door.

So the door does not owe you a longer conversation, and you do not owe the door a shorter one. Both of those are just the geometry of a room with six people coming in behind you.

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.Galatians 6:2

A burden has to be handed over before it can be carried

Look at what that verse quietly assumes. Somebody has to know what the burden is.

Nobody can bear what nobody has been handed. Paul is not describing a congregation of people who intuit each other's troubles across a car park; he is describing a congregation where things get said, out loud, to somebody, at a time and in a place where there was room for saying it. And the room is the point. The burden does not travel from one back to another at a doorway with an urn ticking behind it. It travels over a kitchen table at nine on a Tuesday, or in a car park with two people leaning on a wing and neither of them in a hurry.

You have somewhere to set it down, and it was never meant to be the corridor. Galatians 6:2 hands the load to the body on purpose, which means the body is the designed place for it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the quiet work of putting the right person in front of you and giving you the nerve to open your mouth to them. Nobody has to be prised open. Somebody has to be asked.

And here is what the same verse refuses to say. It never says the strong carry and the weak get carried. It says one another, both directions, no ranking, and the man on the door with eleven years behind him has a stretch of road in his own week that nobody has asked him about either.

You are wanted here without being interesting. His word says the Lord takes pleasure in His people, present tense, no clause attached about how the week went, and the Spirit is the one who makes that land as affection rather than as policy. There is no version of you that has to be worth the airtime.

That is the whole quiet lie under a four second answer, by the way. Not that anybody would refuse the long version. That the long version has stopped feeling worth anybody's afternoon. And a man who believes that about himself will keep handing back the baton for years and call it good manners.

The breakthrough

Hiding is the wrong word for this, and that needs saying first, because the word hiding drags shame in behind it, and shame is not in this room.

What happened is smaller and more ordinary than hiding. A courtesy hardened. The door asked for four seconds because a door can only hold four seconds, and the four seconds fitted so well that they got used everywhere else too, and nobody noticed because nobody was checking, least of all you.

You have a Listener who has never once been on a schedule. Psalm 62:8 tells a whole crowd of ordinary people to pour out their heart before Him, and pour is not a tidy word, it is a word for something that goes everywhere and cannot be done in stages, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what pours and carries it up when the wording will not come. There is no queue behind Him. Nobody needs the door held.

So the longer answer does not have to be earned back or worked up to. It does not need a better week to justify it, or a crisis to license it. It only needs one place where the geometry allows it: one room without a queue in it, one person not on their way somewhere, one seat with time either side of it.

That is why the thing to do with your body this week is a seat. Not a speech.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the plain voice, sitting down. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was never something built up by speaking well; Scripture calls it given to you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it hold in a corridor exactly as firmly as it holds in a hymn. And however He answers what you say, the outcome is His to decide, and the ground under your feet does not move either way.

  1. Four second answer, you are a good manner and you were never my whole voice, and in the name of Jesus you stop standing in for the truth in every room I walk into. Scripture says the Lord searched me and knew me before the thought was a sentence, so the long version was never news to Him.
  2. Fear that there is nothing left in me worth more than four seconds, you get no seat in this house and no hand over my mouth. I am hidden with Christ, and the God who takes pleasure in His people takes pleasure in the tired version too.
  3. Lord, You are the One who knew my sitting down and my rising up before I owned a coat or a car key, and I bring You the long version now. I thank You, because Your written word never once asked me to be interesting, only honest, and the Holy Spirit carries the part I cannot get into a sentence. Here it is, unsummarized, at last.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
