The Honest WalkIsaiah 55:11

Where the Underlining Stops

This message is for a Bible annotated to page four hundred and untouched after it

Open your own Bible on the table and look at it the way you would look at somebody else's.

The first stretch is a wreck, in the best possible way. Underlining in at least three colors, because you used whatever pen was on the table that morning and none of them were ever the pen you meant to keep using. A date in one margin from a hard winter. A coffee ring that has gone through two pages and made a pale brown moon on both. One place where you pressed so hard the biro came through and the verse underneath got a line it never asked for. Somebody's initial beside a promise. Two corners folded down and one folded down twice, which means it mattered enough to lose and find again.

Then, somewhere around page four hundred, it stops.

Not gradually. It stops the way a track stops at a field gate. One page has a bracket and a star and a note in your own handwriting, and the next has nothing on it at all, and neither does anything after it. From there to the back cover the book is showroom condition. The pages are stiff. They make that crisp sound when you turn them, the sound a book makes when nobody has been in it, and honestly it is not a sound you love hearing in your own Bible in your own kitchen.

The gilt on the edges is still perfect down the back half. That is the detail that gets you, if you are the kind of person it gets.

And this is the funny part, if you have the stomach for it. You could not be more committed. You are there every week and half the weeks in between. You have carried other people through hard seasons. You gave away a Bible last year, a nice one, to somebody who needed it. If a person asked you in the car park what you have been reading lately, you would say something about how good the Psalms are, and it would not be a lie, exactly, because you do love the Psalms.

It is only that the last time you sat down with that book on purpose, unhurried, with the phone in the other room, was longer ago than you would say out loud if anybody asked you to be precise. And nobody asks you to be precise. That is the trouble with the question. It comes with a built in escape route, and everybody uses it, and everybody knows everybody is using it, and so the conversation goes round again about how good the Psalms are.

You know the page. Yours might not be four hundred. Yours might be a plan tucked into the front cover with day one soft at the corner and day nine still crisp. Yours might be an app that sends you a gentle notification at seven which you dismiss from the pillow with an accuracy you have never once achieved at anything else. Yours might be a prayer life that is fluent out loud in a room and has gone strangely formal in private, like writing to a bank.

Whatever your version is, there is a version of you in the building and a version of you in the car, and the distance between the two of them has been quietly widening for a while, and you have never once said that sentence to anybody.

Where the Underlining Stops

The pages that are already in you

Let me say first what I am not going to do, so you can put your guard down and read the rest of this with both hands free.

I am not going to hand you a reading plan. If a plan were the answer, the one already folded into the front of that Bible would have worked, and so would the two on your phone. There is no information problem here, and no system has ever been the missing piece. What has happened is older and gentler than that, and it deserves a truer answer than a chart.

So here is the truer answer, and it is about what happens to words after they go in.

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.Isaiah 55:11

Read who that verse is about. It is not about the reader's diligence. There is no percentage in it anywhere. It is a sentence about the word itself, which goes out of His mouth like rain going out of a cloud, and it does the thing it was sent to do, and it comes back having done it.

You have four hundred pages of that word already in you, and not one of them came back empty. Isaiah 55:11 does not put a completion clause on it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been quietly finishing the work of every underlined line since the morning you underlined it, in seasons when the book stayed shut on the shelf.

That is not a consolation prize. It is how the word has always worked. It went into you in a hard winter and it has been at work in you ever since, in the way you spoke to somebody at a bus stop, in the thing you did not say when you had every right to say it, in the fact that a woman with a pristine back half of a Bible is still, at forty something, entirely unable to stop loving God.

You were never given His word on a completion basis. The written word compares it to seed and to rain and to bread, which are three things nobody finishes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that seed working underground in a season when nothing at all is visible above it.

The two of you

Now the gap, because that is the thing that actually hurts, and it is not the same thing as the crisp pages.

The version of you in the building speaks like somebody who reads it. That version is not a fraud. Hear that properly. She is not a performance and she is not a lie. She is mostly a hope: she is who you actually love being, and she is who you actually are on the mornings when the whole thing is alive in you.

And the version in the car is not the real one either. This is where people go wrong. We have a habit of assuming that the smaller, tireder, quieter version is the honest one and the other is the act, as if the truth about a person were always the least flattering available option. That is not a doctrine. That is a mood.

You are one person, and the quieter one is not the true one. Scripture says we are His workmanship, singular and unfinished, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been making one walk out of two versions since long before you noticed there were two.

But the distance between them is real, and the distance is what costs. Every widening inch of it takes upkeep. It means monitoring what you say, remembering what you implied, steering the conversation away from anything that would require a precise answer. It is not sin that makes a person tired at the church door. It is the accounting.

Here is what closes it, and it is one sentence, said out loud, unedited.

O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.Psalm 139:1 to 2

You have already been read, all the way through, by somebody who did not put the book down. Psalm 139 says the searching happened before the confessing did, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a relief instead of a threat.

That is the whole reason honesty is safe here. You are not disclosing anything. There is no page He turned to and got a surprise. The private version, the dismissed notification, the years the ribbon did not move: all of it was known and He stayed, and He has been at work in the four hundred pages the entire time.

The breakthrough

The gap does not close by catching up.

That is the instinct, and it is wrong, and following it is why this has been going round for years. The instinct says: get the reading back on track, get the private version up to the standard of the public one, and then the honesty will be affordable. So the plan goes back in the front cover, and it runs for nine days.

It closes the other way round. It closes with one true sentence, and the reading follows honesty rather than earning it.

You are welcome in that room with the ribbon exactly where it is. Scripture says He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, which is not an insult but the tenderest audit ever written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a person who has been managing two versions of herself and puts them back together at the pace of a real life.

Whatever He does with your reading after that is His to decide. This is not a technique for getting the back half of the book opened. It is the end of a private accounting that has been costing you more than the reading ever did.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with the book in your hand, open at the page where the underlining stops, because that is the page you have been hiding from a God who has been reading over your shoulder the whole time. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak this is already yours and it does not go up and down with your reading. Scripture says His word does not return to Him empty, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old promise land on a woman at a kitchen table. Speak to the page, never about yourself. What He does with the rest of that book is His to decide, and however He answers, the four hundred pages already in you are His finished work.

  1. Page four hundred, you are a place a ribbon stopped, and you are not the measure of a life with God. Scripture says His word goes out of His mouth and does not return to Him void, so in the name of Jesus I take my verdict off you and put it back where it belongs.
  2. Fear of being found out, get out of my throat. The written word says He searched me and knew me before I ever said a word about it, and the Holy Spirit does not run an audit He has not already finished.
  3. Lord, You have read every page of me and You did not close the book, and You are not standing at the shelf waiting for me to catch up. I thank You that the underlining stopped and Your work in me did not. Whatever You do with the rest of that book, I am Yours while it sits shut.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
