The Regulars1 Chronicles 9:27

The Other Key

This message is for holding the other key, unlocking before everybody and locking up after everybody, for years

There are two keys to that building, and he has the other one.

His has a length of orange baler twine through the ring, because somewhere around the fourth year everybody agreed that the twine was how you told it apart. It is long and flat and deeply unfashionable. And it does not turn if you simply turn it. You have to lift the door about a centimetre with your left hand while you turn with your right, and then it goes round as though it were made yesterday.

Everybody who has ever borrowed that key has come back and said, in a tone of real grievance, "That key doesn't work." And he says, "You have to lift it." And they say, "Lift what?" That conversation has now happened, by his own reckoning, eleven times.

He knows things about that building that nobody else has ever had to learn. The bank of switches inside the door goes middle, then left, then far right, and the second one from the left has done nothing at all since the rewiring, and there is a piece of tape over it that he put there. The boiler wants the little tap on the pipe turned a quarter round and then back. The fire door at the far end swings if the top window is open, and there is a rubber wedge for that, and the wedge lives behind the radiator, and he is currently the only living person who knows the wedge lives behind the radiator.

He is first in and last out. Every week, both ends of it.

And nobody has ever asked him about the ten minutes.

He gets there twenty-five minutes before anybody, and for a while he stands in a cold room in the half dark. Then the heating. Then the lights, one bank at a time, and the room comes up out of the dark like something being woken rather than switched on. At the other end, when the last car has gone off the gravel, he does the whole thing in reverse: the lights down one bank at a time, the room going back under, and him at the door with his hand on the last switch for a second or two longer than is strictly necessary.

Every week. For years.

You know that key. Maybe yours is not a key at all. Maybe it is the account nobody else has the password to, or the van, or the rota you rebuild every quarter, or the fact that you are the only one who knows where the spare bulbs live. Whatever your version is, you know both ends of the day in that place and almost nobody else knows either of them.

And here is the part that would never fit in a strip, because there is nothing funny in it. Somewhere in the last few years a suspicion has moved in and made itself at home: that he might, in some quiet and awful way, be the key. That if he handed it over on Sunday there would be a kind and slightly awkward thank you, and then he would find out something about himself that he has been carefully not finding out for nine years.

The Other Key

The book that bothered to write the door down

There is a chapter in Scripture that almost nobody reads on purpose.

It is a list. Names, sons of names, families and their allotted work, the kind of ground a reader crosses at speed on the way to something with a story in it. And in the middle of that list, with no fanfare whatsoever, somebody set down the arrangements for the doors.

They lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them. And the opening of it, every morning, pertained to them.

Sit with that a moment. Somebody wrote the door openers into the permanent record. Not the sermon that day, not the crowd, not the takings: the men who came first and had the charge of the key. That sentence went through the exile, and the copying, and every century since, and it is still sitting there in the middle of a genealogy because God did not consider it a detail.

You are named in a book that had no obligation whatsoever to mention doors. Scripture keeps the opening of the house every morning in the permanent record while it lets a great many louder things go unmentioned, and 1 Chronicles 9 is where that decision is visible. The Holy Spirit was the One superintending what got written down, and He kept the keys in.

And they lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them, and the opening thereof every morning pertained to them.1 Chronicles 9:27

That word "pertained" is doing quiet work. It does not say they volunteered, or that they were the only ones available, or that they filled a gap nobody else wanted. It says the opening belonged to them. It was theirs the way a name is yours: not a task on a list, a thing that pertained.

You have been given a charge and not merely a chore. Scripture puts the word charge on it, and it uses the same kind of language it uses for the men carrying the holy things, without one syllable of ranking between them. The Spirit does not run a two tier system where the visible work is real and the rest is admin.

First in is a kind of seeing

Now the ten minutes, because that is where the actual gift is, and nobody has ever told him it was one.

Almost everybody who walks into that room sees it in one condition: full, lit, warm, and with people in it doing what they came to do. He sees it in every other condition there is. Cold in February with his breath showing. Blue and strange at seven in the morning in June. Empty in the way a room is only ever empty to somebody who has just watched thirty people leave it.

That is not the lesser view of that building. It is the closer one, and it is nearer to the way God sees it all week, because God is in that room on Tuesday afternoon when there is nobody in it at all.

You have been near that house at hours nobody else keeps, and the nearness is the point rather than the price. Scripture says the men with the charge lodged round about the house of God, so the nearness came bundled with the keys and was never a fee they paid for them. The Holy Spirit does not clock on when a crowd arrives; He is in the empty room at half past six with the one who came to put the heating on.

And now the thing that has to be said plainly, because everything else here is worth nothing without it.

If you handed that key over on Sunday, you would be exactly the same man on Monday.

Not diminished. Not demoted. Not quietly less. The charge is real and the charge is not the worth, and the two have been welded together in your thinking for so long that pulling them apart is going to feel like losing something for about a week. It is not. It is putting down a weight that was never part of the job description, and it was never one God attached to you.

You were loved a long time before the twine ever went on that ring. Scripture says He loved us while we were yet without strength, and Romans 5 puts the loving before the usefulness rather than after it, which is the whole order of the gospel in one verse. The Holy Spirit did not begin bearing witness with your spirit on the day you took a set of keys.

The breakthrough

The charge is not the wage, and it is not the worth.

Say it slowly, because a person who has done both ends of the day for years builds an economy in his head without ever deciding to. In that economy the key buys something. It buys a place, or a right to be there, or a defense against a question nobody has actually asked him. And the trouble with an economy like that is not that it is greedy. It is that it is exhausting, and it never closes, and there is no evening on which the account is finally square.

You are not paid in being noticed, and you were never on that payroll to begin with. Scripture says whatever you do, do it heartily as to the Lord and not unto men, and Colossians 3 moves the whole transaction to a different desk entirely. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that stop being a nice principle and start being a relief.

So nothing here is asking you for more. Not one extra rota, not one earlier morning, not one further thing added to a load that has already been carried without applause for years. If anything, the opposite: the load can come down a great deal, because most of its weight was never the work. It was the ledger.

Keep the key or hand the key on. Both are honorable, and the man is the same man either way.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the empty room, with your hand on the switch. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak over a building and a job nobody counts belongs to you and it was given rather than earned. 1 Chronicles 9 is where the words come from, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a line out of a genealogy and lays it over a man with a key in his pocket. Whatever He does with the next nine years is His to decide, and the seeing underneath them does not depend on it.

  1. Key with the orange twine on it, you are a good key and you are not my name. Scripture wrote the opening of the house every morning into the permanent record, so the charge on me is real, and in the name of Jesus I put down the ledger I have been keeping beside it.
  2. Fear that I am only worth what I open, you have no claim on a man Scripture says was loved while he was yet without strength, and the Holy Spirit bore witness with my spirit long before there was a key. Get out of this room. I am not the caretaking, and I never was.
  3. Lord, You were in this room at half past six on every one of those mornings, and You have never once needed telling what it cost. Thank You, because You wrote the doors down when You could have written anything.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
